There is probably a more technical answer, but since I am not a techie,
but an editor, here goes. One of the most apparent elements in
degradation (the loss of detail due to multiple generations) is chroma
crawl. That is the "bleeding" of colors between color contrasted
elements in your scene, most notibly red. When you introduce illegal
NTSC colors, you dramaticaly increase your chroma crawl.
